Man, I hate the dentist.
Yeah, yeah, I know, just about everyone says that... but when you have teeth as crookedly out of alignment as mine (though my bite's still liveable) which makes cleaning an absolute pain personally, imagine how much more work it leaves the hygenist to have do. :( My aunt is a hygenist for a living, so it makes me very sympathetic to what they do. Also didn't help that it took a year between cleanings versus 6 months, we've had so many holidays where I'd been temping and I wasn't getting paid I couldn't afford to not work a day until now...
Which then leads to the obvious question why I don't get them fixed. Well, when I had a sister (Lesley) who had to be in some form of orthodontics from ages 10 to 21 since practically none of her teeth fell out naturally and braces for both of us were out of the question, you learn to function like this. And frankly, I'm not that hung up on physical appearances, as long as it works. Now granted it could work better, but it does work. And also, to be honest, I can't AFFORD them. Right out, I can't even contemplate taking on another monthly payment of any level, when I can barely meet what I'm doing now and there are things I should be doing I'm not like saving more money, actually putting funds in the IRA, not having to figure out what essentials I can cut out when I desperately need more clothes, etc. There's nothing left I can cut entirely without taking part of my sanity with it. Which is why I practically bit the dental office manager's head off after telling her my DMO doesn't cover orthodnotics and I can't afford them, she suggested the monthly payment. Or immediately wanting to give me the composite filling I have to go back for in a couple weeks when I know the amalgam is half the cost, and again, most of the fillings in my teeth are silver anyway so I really don't care about the looks thing. And did I mention that the DMO actually changed the plan to institute a COPAY this year for cleaning and exam? Um, somehow I missed that. So I had to cough up $25 I wasn't planning on. Grumble.
It's just the latest string in a long line of frustrations in my life.
This afternoon made up for a lot of that though. I got late word that WizardWorld was downtown at the LA Convention Center this year, which is practically a hop skip and jump from where I live -- under 30 minutes by subway. Even better was that I got in as a pro, but even though I paid a nominal fee to register onsite it was still cheaper than the one day pass for a regular person. This gave me the funds on hand to go to the SLAVE LABOR GRAPHICS booth and buy the HAUNTED MANSION issues #1 and #2 I'd kind of been looking forward to checking out. A couple of years ago, this wouldn't have been my thing, but between working on INVADER ZIM and MIDNIGHT HORROR SCHOOL I'm not as put off by these styles of art and storytelling as I was previously. And they are really really fun. It's an anthology book with a mix of different writers and artists throughout. And anyone who is a fan of Roman Dirge's LENORE, she makes a appearance in Issue 2. Made me laugh, and I haven't been laughing much these days.
The main reason I went to WizardWorld was that Slave Labor Graphics had a panel scheduled at 2PM featuring owner Dan Vado, and the writer and artist for the GARGOYLES comic that picks up where the TV series left off (these people being Greg Weisman as writer, and David Hedgecock as artist, respectively). Sadly, the panel had been scheduled only an hour into the convention's openings opposite some big giveaways on the modestly small exhibit hall floor. So there were only a couple of us there, myself and one press reporter from the beginning and a few others trickled in later. But for the few of us there it was a wonderful intimate presentation Q&A that made it well worth my $10. I even laughed a few more times. Dan I've met before and he's a good speaker, and Greg I've known for years, but this was my first exposure to Dave. Very shy, humble to the point he walks the line of putting himself down... kind of like I can be at times. (Ask Kevin Paul Shaw Broden or my sister)
They showed upcoming covers for HAUNTED MANSION, sample panels for other Disney licensed comics TRON and WONDERLAND, and of course GARGOYLES. Apprently Dave also letters for TRON and possibly even WONDERLAND, if I understood right, in addition to drawing GARGOYLES. These GARGOYLES pages were several of the pages shown in a recent interview at CBR, which looking at the two that were projected on the screen (page 3 I know, I think the other was page 6) either web resolution does rotten things to colors or what are posted there in the CBR interview are color comps. The colors were much better here than my initial reaction on CBR. But some things, like a desperate need for refined linework on the castle on page 3, still cry out for attention. It's impossible of course for anyone to get everything perfect right out of the gate, and that must be kept in mind.
I'm still hearing a June release date for GARGOYLES. WONDERLAND is in Previews, I did not see TRON on sale at the SLG booth but it seemed like it should be released shortly.
After the panel I thanked the guests and immediately had to head home for the evenings tasks I knew already awaited me. First went out to Souplantation towards Beverly Hills with a coupon in hand because I figured it my cheapest way to score anything resembling corned beef and cabbage (soup), though the Irish Soda Bread was good too. Let me finish a book I have to have finished for the Womens Lit Group at church tomrrow, and now I'm working on the laundry. Rest still alludes me... but at least I've had a partially good day.
