Jun. 8th, 2006

I worked late for hours on my feet for hours straight making photocopies. On OVERTIME pay. Stuff that HAD to be done tonight. A LOT of stuff. As I've said, work is busy in general.

I remember roughly about a decade ago, I was making next to no money for three weeks on a Production Assistant gig on a little show called JUMANJI. And this was all I did. Now those same efficiency and skills were called into use, working alone, for over a four hour period.

Amazing what changes and amazing what stays the same.

So... I'm going to do the wise thing and put off actually typing up the notes for a person who has hired me to help her brush of the form on an animation spec (this person, though with TV credits, is still getting the hang of some of animation's special quirks) until tomorrow. I read the script last night -- 2nd draft -- but I don't think there's any way I can convey them clearly right now.

For the record, I think I have turned out to be a better editor than writer. Though I've tried to keep the editing focus more on format and less on story, mainly because I'm always afraid I'll start inadvertantly telling people how to write their story, I don't always succeed. It's very hard to not do an example of how something doesn't appear to work and not come off suggesting an alternate story idea for me, and thereby I try to really avoid doing it.

Truthfully, I don't go out solciting stuff to look at but in the last year I've now had several people approach me. So I'm willing to do it as long as the terms are clear as to what I will and won't do, and get contracts involved when we're dealing with reviewing original scripts or properties. It's nice to be wanted and trusted, though at times I'm not sure I deserve it.

Also, Tuesday night was pretty cool. A friend of mine and Kevin's who has been the overseas supervisor for all the contract animation houses of a well-known independent animation company was in town for a few days. We got to catch up with him in Burbank, see his wife again, and meet his 7 month old little boy. Also met some of his other friends from the animation and visual effects industries. First in the hotel bar, then sushi for dinner. It was a great time, though sad because no telling when we'll meet again as his main home with the family is now in Asia.

Now to sleep. It's been a long day.
